Level Up Your Charging: Why Tacoma Public Utility Customers Should Install a Level 2 EV Charger Now

Are you a Tacoma Public Utility (TPU) customer thinking of switching to an electric vehicle (EV) or currently using a Level 1 charger? 2024 is your year to upgrade to a Level 2 charger. Here’s why it’s a smart, affordable move for every EV owner in the Tacoma area.

Speed Up with Level 2

Firstly, Level 2 chargers are a game changer for EV owners. While Level 1 chargers use a standard 120-volt outlet, Level 2 chargers utilize a 240-volt outlet – the same type used for heavy appliances like dryers. This jump in voltage means significantly faster charging, so you can get back on the road quicker. Not familiar with charger types? Check out our guide to chargers and plugs here!

Affordable and Accessible Charging Options

TPU is now offering incredible incentives for installing Level 2 chargers, making this upgrade more affordable than ever. You can receive:

  • $400 Bill Credit: When you buy and install a Level 2 charger or a smart splitter, or for installing a 240-volt outlet.
  • Up to $600 Maximum Credit: If you install more than one of these options.

Remember, applications must be submitted within 90 days of your purchase, and the installation needs to be done before applying.

Making Installation Easy

Many EVs come with a Level 2 plug, requiring only a 240-volt outlet for fast home charging. TPU’s incentive covers this installation cost when paired with a hardwired Level 2 charger or Smart Splitter. Keep these points in mind:

  • Installation must be done by a licensed electrician.
  • Your electrical panel should have space for a new 240-volt service.
  • The new EV circuit must be at least 30 amps.
  • Only one 240-volt outlet incentive is allowed per customer account.

Easy Rebate Application

Getting your bill credit is straightforward:

  1. Decide which offer(s) suit your EV charging needs.
  2. If needed, consult with a contractor (we have a list of helpful contractors).
  3. Purchase and install your equipment.
  4. Start your online application here.
  5. Include proof of purchase and installation receipts.
  6. Agree to the Terms and Conditions and submit your application.

The credit will appear on your utility invoice within one to two billing cycles.

Eligibility and Product Specifications

You must be a current Tacoma Power residential customer and provide proof of purchase for one of the approved products. For a Level 2 charger, it must be UL Listed, at least 20 amps (4.8 kW), and can be either plug-in or hardwired. Smart splitters also need to be UL Listed and can be plug-in or hardwired.

Why Wait?

Upgrading to a Level 2 charger is not just about faster charging; it’s an investment in your lifestyle and the environment. With TPU’s incentives, there’s never been a better time to make the switch. Plus, being prepared for future technology shifts makes economic sense.
